Large-area boards

The Erplast company specializes in the production and installation of vertical markings and road safety devices. Key products include large-size boards and sporadic constructions. The execution of tables with an area of several dozen square meters is difficult and requires accuracy in production and assembly.

Experimental labeling

In 2013, Erplast was the first company in Poland to produce and assemble boards in accordance with the latest European standard applied in particular on expressways and motorways. The experienced section prepared by GDDKiA took place on the motorway next to Toruń - section A1 Czerniewice-Kowal. During this construction, boards with a sandwich panel were used. The technology has met the quality requirements, and the signs all the time create a smooth surface and are legible.

The experimental marking is characterized by the introduction of road node numbering and the use of directional arrows over each lane. In addition to improving readability, the surfaces of the boards on one gantry have been leveled.

Selected projects experimental labeling

  • S7 Janki + S2 Warsaw ring road
  • A2 modernization of the Słubice node
  • A1 Stryków - Tuszyn
  • S3 - 6 sections of the expressway

The production of boards takes place entirely at the plant in Bydgoszcz. Special machines permanently connect the core with sheet metal claddings. Then, boards up to 12 m long and 1.2 m wide are machined on numerical machines. The arrays prepared in this way are glued and framed. The production process consists of a limited number of specialized operations. As a result, the product is reproducible and fast in production. Installation on the construction site runs smoothly and safely. The boards are nearly twice as lighter than the equivalent of 1.5 mm steel sheet. Thanks to this work is lighter and faster. Attached to vertical posts, they obtain surfaces up to 80 m2.

The special, flatness and resistance to weather conditions of the laminated boards found at the time were appreciated by investors all over Poland. Such tables have been used in the implementation of major road investments. An example from 2015 is the construction of the S7 road.

In connection with the commissioning of a new section, a change of traffic organization on the S2 road was also introduced. In a short time, nearly 700 m2 of road signs with constructions were mentioned. A great example of the capabilities of Erplast Sp. z o.o. is the A1 motorway signage. Systematically devoted sections from Gdańsk, mostly to Stryków. The latest episode of Stryków-Tuszyn is also marked by a Bydgoszcz producer.

Each manufacturer of fixed vertical signs should demonstrate possession of a Certificate of Stability of Performance issued by a notified research body and specify a Declaration of Performance for this product. Having these documents authorizes the manufacturer to mark their products with the CE mark. Erplast Sp. z o.o. perform digital printing of road signs, because it has all the appropriate certificates. It is in the interest of procuring entities to control these documents. The production technology at the Bydgoszcz plant includes certificates for:

  • foil
  • varnishes used in digital printing
  • transparent laminate
  • printing and gluing process

Steel plates are made of sheet metal with a thickness of 1.5 mm.

Panel panels are connected by means of steel locks additionally secured with screws. In order to improve stiffness, steel frames are mounted around, and stiffening profiles inside. Precisely connected panels create boards of any size.

The boards are designed while maintaining the condition of the minimum number of segments. This improves the durability and readability of the table. Support structures are selected taking into account own weight and wind pressure forces.

Signs and boards consist of external layers of galvanized and painted steel sheet and a core made of foamed polystyrene. The thickness of the foundation is 24 mm. The layered structure provides high rigidity with a two-fold reduction in the weight of the board. The edges are secured with a galvanized and painted frame. The boards are corrosion resistant. The high aesthetics of the boards is a big advantage. They are produced by qualified staff on numerical machining machines - CNC milling machines.

The boards were tested in the wind tunnel of the Institute of Aviation in Warsaw. During the simulation of the wind with the force of a hurricane, the tables did not undergo any deformation or destruction. The largest panels are manufactured with lengths up to 12 m and width 1.2 m. In addition, it is possible to make custom arches at the edges.

An important problem is the phenomenon of hanging tables. As the temperature of the tables approaches the dew point, settling of water droplets on the surface of the tables occurs. The phenomenon applies to tables of all producers. As a result, the signs do not reflect light rays and are illegible. Layer tables limit such events. The research was carried out by the GDDKiA branch in Poznań on the research sections.
